STEAM+ Kicks-off!
Welcome to the STEAM+ project! The project Innovating STE(A)M in Higher Education with Transdisciplinary Talent Programs has started and held its kick-off meeting. From now on, we will regularly update you about the progress in the project.
Europe faces grand challenges, such as climate change and energy transition, which have a STEM subject at their core, but need transversal skills and knowledge from All other subjects (the extra A) to create STEAM solutions. We need to use brains, hearts and hands of all talents to tackle these challenges.
Project basics
The EU-funded STEAM+ project (Innovating STE(A)M in Higher Education with Transdisciplinary Talent Programs) aims at providing educational policy makers with instruments to prepare new generations for handling the challenges of our time. It does so by using transdisciplinary talent programs as laboratories of innovation in higher education (HE).
The project intends to create two main products:
1. An instrument on how to establish transdisciplinary talent programs in HE: The STEAM+ Innovation Lab Implementation Path;
2. An instrument for policy makers at HE, local, regional, national and EU levels to support and recognize (development of) such programs: the STEAM+ Menu for Policy Inspiration.
The project team will organize three STEAM+ Innovation Labs, which will bring together teachers and students from the nine project countries. They form important milestones to create the main products. More info is here.
The STEAM+ Consortium
The STEAM+ consortium includes 18 partners from 9 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway and Romania.
This includes 10 higher education institutions (HEIs), 7 policy-related partner organizations, and one company. The project steering group is formed by nine national coordinators, the quality assurance officer and the project leader, who are all attached to the HEIs.
In addition, 34 associate partners are involved; and an external Advisory Board provides feedback to the project team.
They will be introduced in the next newsletter.
Kick-off meeting
-On 5-6 March 2020, the project steering group met in Groningen (Netherlands). This was just before the main coronavirus outbreak in Europe and all were there, except for our Italian colleagues, who joined on Skype.
-We discussed various ideas around the concept of STEAM education, in relation to talent development and honors programs in higher education
-Work packages, project administration, cooperation arrangements and project planning were discussed, focusing on preparation of the STEAM+ Innovation Labs
-The team at Collegio Internazionale Ca' Foscari in Venice (Italy), which organizes the first STEAM+ Innovation Lab, presented their detailed plans
Update on impact of coronavirus crisis
-The project team is working hard to keep an overview of the situation per country and is in close contact with the funding agency in Brussels
-The first STEAM+ Lab, which was due to take place in Venice in July, is now postponed to October

-A very basic website was published at www.steamtalent.eu. A fully operational website is planned for summer 2020.
-A project logo is in development
